Abbey Road to Zapple Records
A Beatles Encyclopedia

"In writing this book," the author explains, "I set out to test all the little rumors for myself. Is it true that `Strawberry Fields Forever' is about drugs? Did the Beatles once record as the Beat Brothers? Was Abbey Road really the Beatles' last album? (The answers, working backward in true Beatles style, are yes, no, and most likely not.)"

Noting that "The Guinness Book of World Records originated from the disputes over sports records which Irish bar patrons would often argue over pints of Guinness," the author goes on to say in the preface to Abbey Road to Zapple Records, "Likewise the origins of this book lie in all the intriguing little stories I used to hear from my elders concerning the Beatles--some of them true; some... shall we say, embellished." At its heart, Abbey Road to Zapple Records is about such "intriguing little stories." As the author has observed, "We all have our little stories, which is why I think we were all so deeply affected by the killing of John Lennon. It wasn't just him we were crying for: it was our youth, our childhood, all the unfulfilled longings which found expression in the Beatles' music. And that, ultimately, is the reason that justifies the existence of not only this, but the next hundred books about the Beatles."

The Beatles
Illustrated Lyrics
by Alan Aldridge (editor)

Available in:

Canada

United States

United Kingdom

First published in 1969, this reissued collection of illustrated lyrics for 200 Beatles songs will be a treasure for any fan of the Fab Four. Editor and Beatle-buddy Alan Aldridge states in his introduction to the original edition: "What I have tried to do is present a book [that] is as entertaining to the eye and the imagination as a Beatles album is to the ear." Indeed, he more than succeeds, creating a lavish pageant of art and music that embraces not only the Beatles but also the psychedelic spirit of the entire era.

In 320 photos and illustrations, renowned artists offer their interpretations of various songs. "Help" is visualized by Ronald Searle; "Fixing a Hole," by Tomi Ungerer; "Glass Onion," by Peter Max; "I'm So Tired," by David Hockney; and "Oh, Darling," by Ralph Steadman. Aldridge also contributes his own trippy illustrations, which reflect the bold, bulbous, cartoons-on-acid style of 1960s poster art. This rich compilation also has brief quotes from the Beatles explaining the origins of the themes and lyrics of certain songs. For example, despite the buzz that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is about LSD, according to Paul, "What happened was that John's son Julian did a drawing at school and brought it home, and he has a schoolmate named Lucy, and John said, 'What's that?' and he said 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds.'" Band members also share their thoughts on superstardom, including this now weighty comment from John: "I don't intend to be a performing flea anymore. I was the dreamweaver, but although I'll be around I don't intend to be running at 20,000 miles an hour trying to prove myself. I don't want to die at 40." It can't bring them back, but The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics can take you on a long and winding road of nostalgia.

The Beatles Encyclopedia
by Bill Harry

Available in:

Canada

United States

United Kingdom

There are, by now, approximately a thousand books on The Beatles in print, though few merit much serious attention. However, read in conjunction with Mark Lewisohn's The Complete Beatles Chronicle, Bill Harry's newly revised Beatles Encyclopaedia provides the perfect companion to the music. As a teenage friend of John Lennon in Liverpool and the founder of Mersey Beat magazine--which gave The Beatles some of their first mentions in print--Harry has called upon a lifetime of Beatles' knowledge to furnish this 1,198 page book, making it one of the few indispensable books on that most influential of all rock'n'roll bands. The Beatles Encyclopaedia lists every song, gig and person connected with the Fab Four during their career together; and although not intended as a book to sit down and read from cover to cover, once you start dipping in, you'll just keep on going. Here are all the contenders for "fifth Beatle", the chart positions for those unforgettable singles, together with details of all their seismic albums; and the entries are peppered throughout with priceless nuggets of Beatle trivia: from the first time John, Paul, George and Ringo played together on disc (15 October 1960), to the last words uttered by the Beatles to a paying audience (28 August 1966). From the start they truly were unique--and Harry quotes Mersey Beat columnist Bob Wooler, who recognised the fact as far back as 1961: "... the fantastic Beatles. I don't think anything like them will happen again."

Get Back
The Unauthorized Chronicle of the Beatles' Let It Be Disaster
by Doug Sulpy, Ray Schweighardt

Available in:

Canada

United States

United Kingdom

Here, for the first time, Beatles experts Sulpy and Schweighardt trace the group's breakdown through the fascinating prism of the Get Back recording sessions. January 2, 1969: The Beatles begin a month of intensive sessions, designed to capture the musicians "as nature inteded." Playing, raw, live, with no studio tricks or gimmicks, the Beatles were consciously rejecting the high-gloss production style of their recent albums in favor of a return to their earlier stripped-down rock and roll sound. But Beatles Unplugged soon became Beatles Undone, and the project turned into the thirty-day saga of a group in freefall. Bickering and sniping, trudging through sloppy versions of old hits, the Fab Four were coming apart.

For twenty-five years, tapes from the ill-fated Get Back sessions - only a fraction of which were released as Let It Be - have circulated among collectors. Sulpy and Schweighardt, for the first time, have undertaken a Herculean task: Sifting through those countless hours on tape, they reconstruct in amazing detail the drama of those sessions - the songs, jokes, outbursts, and fights. Get Back puts the reader in the studio as John cedes power to Yoko, Paul scrambles to keep things afloat, and George quits the band. It traces each step in the band's unique creative process. And, finally, it relives the glorious coda - when, for an impromptu rooftop concert, all four left their differences downstairs and mustered the singular Beatles magic.

The first book to offer a definitive, minute-by-minute chronicle of the events of that much-discussed month, Get Back is an indispensable addition to every serious Beatle fan's library. Yet it is much more than a simple collection of information: Doug Sulpy and Ray Schweighardt have given us a singularly candid look at these four collaborators in their greatest moment of crisis. There has never been a book on any musical group more intimate, thorough, or revealing.

Turn Me On, Dead Man
The Complete Story of the Paul McCartney Death Hoax
by Andru J. Reeve

Available in:

Canada

United States

United Kingdom

For four weeks in the fall of 1969, Beatle-watchers held their collective breath as the rumoured death of Paul McCartney became the bizarre focus of attention in countless broadcast studios and newsrooms worldwide. The events of October and November 1969 are now documented in Andru Reeve's "Turn Me On, Dead Man: The Complete Story of the Paul McCartney Death Hoax". What made the McCartney death rumour the object of such fascination was the elaborate theory - Paul had been replaced by a "double" following his death in a fiery car crash in 1966 - and supporting "clues", supposedly planted by the Beatles on their album covers and in their recorded songs. This book probes the origins and recounts the evolving story of the "Paul-is-dead" hoax, a shared cultural memory lampooned as recently as February 13, 1993, when McCartney himself was interviewed about his alleged demise during the "Chris Farley Show" segment of "Saturday Night Live". Andru Reeve's account includes interviews with principles in the development and dissemination of the story - disc-jockey Russ Gibb of Detroit's WKNR radio, college sophomore Fred LaBour (then writing for the University Michigan's "Michigan Daily"), Dartanyan Brown (then associate editor of Drake University's "Drake Times-Dephic"), and John Summer, Ohio Wesleyan University's in-house death-hoax expert, as well as comments from the national media perspective by NBC's John Chancellor and ABC anchor Howard K. Smith. As to the origins of the rumour that swept the American Midwest, the entire US, and then circulated around the globe, Reeve points out that rumours of McCartney's death in a car crash had originally made the rounds in England in the first few months of 1967, but were quickly quashed when the press determined that there was no truth to them. Reeve further speculates that the revival of the car-crash story may have its origins in a song called "Saint Paul," a song written by performer Terry Knight and released on Capitol Records a full five months before the rumour gained national prominence, a song which received significant airplay in Knight's adopted hometown - Detroit, Michigan. The main text of "Turn Me On, Dead Man" is supported by three appendices, including a discussion of 70 of the "clues" to Paul's death purportedly hidden in the Beatles' albums and songs, a reprint of a study by Barbara Suczek called "The Curious Case of the 'Death' of Paul McCartney" (originally published in 1972 in the journal "Urban Life and Culture"), and a look at other rumours associated with the Beatles - Lord Sitar, The Masked Marauders, Futz and Klaatu. An "Afterword" by death-rumour expert/lecturer Joel Galzier concludes the work.

The Walrus Was Paul
The Great Beatle Death Clues
by R. Gary Patterson, J. Fox (introduction)

Available in:

Canada

United States

United Kingdom

In the late 1960s, rumours of Paul McCartney's death began to spread through a worldwide network of Beatles fans. The idea that Paul had been killed in a car accident was only perpetuated by a series of sneaky, underhanded hints on a subsequent series of album covers, song lyrics and cryptic anagrams coming out of Beatles headquarters. The Walrus Was Paul: The Great Beatles Death Clues looks at every one of those hints, from the meaning of the photograph on the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album to the moustache conspiracy. It examines the intricate clues behind the mystery to discover not only a phenomenon of popular culture, but also a very slippery bigger-than-god band.

Test your "Paul is dead" trivia knowledge. Did you find and answer the following clues on the front cover?

To what song does the title, The Walrus Was Paul, refer?
"I Am the Walrus," which appeared on the clue-filled album Magical Mystery Tour.
There is an egg in Paul's eye. Why?
In the song "I Am the Walrus," John Lennon sings, "I am the eggman...I am the walrus" -- and later, in the song "Glass Onion," we find out that, in fact, "the walrus was Paul."
To what album (and richest source of "Paul is dead" clues) do the red, Victorian-style design elements on the front refer?
